A crown is a custom-made cap that fits entirely over a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and function while protecting it from further breakdown. It is commonly used after a large filling, a root canal, or a fracture that has left too little natural tooth to support a simple restoration.

A bridge takes the same principle further, using crowns on the teeth either side of a gap to anchor a false tooth in between — replacing one or more missing teeth without surgery, in a way that looks and functions like your natural bite.

Fitting

The final restoration is checked for fit and bite, then permanently cemented into place.

When is a crown recommended?

A crown is usually recommended for a tooth with a large filling, a crack, or one that has been root-canal treated and needs extra protection.
A bridge is a good option for replacing one or more missing teeth when the adjacent teeth are already strong enough to support crowns, or when a patient prefers to avoid the surgery and healing time involved with implants. If the supporting teeth are not healthy enough, or if preserving those teeth untouched is a priority, an implant may be a better fit instead.

What patients ask us

The preparation stage is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain. Some mild sensitivity around the tooth is common for a few days afterward, and this typically settles as you adjust to the restoration.

Typically two visits spaced one to two weeks apart: one for preparation and impressions, and one for fitting the final restoration once it has been fabricated. You will wear a temporary crown or bridge in between so you are never left without a functioning tooth.

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, crowns and bridges commonly last 10 to 15 years, and often longer. Their longevity depends on factors such as oral hygiene, bite forces and the materials used.

A crown is for restoring a single damaged tooth that is still present. A bridge or an implant are both options for replacing a missing tooth — a bridge uses the neighbouring teeth for support, while an implant stands independently in the jawbone. We will recommend the option best suited to your bone health, budget, and the condition of the adjacent teeth.
